Why the France Passion Pass Was the Best Thing We Packed for Our Family Camping Trip Through France

There are some travel purchases you make and immediately regret.

Airport sandwich? Regret.
Tiny overpriced sunscreen at a gas station? Regret.
That one pair of shoes that were supposed to be the perfect meeting of cute and functional? Deep regret.

And then there are the purchases that make you feel super clever.

For our two-week family camping trip through France, the France Passion Pass was firmly in the clever category.

Honestly, I’d go so far as to say it was one of the best things we brought with us.

Wait… What Is the France Passion Pass?

Think of it as France’s answer to “What if we made road tripping magical?”

The France Passion Pass gives you access to overnight stays at hundreds of farms, vineyards, orchards, cheese producers, and small artisan properties all across France.

Instead of staying at a standard campground every night, you can park up on a vineyard overlooking the vines, wake up next to sunflower fields, or let your kids meet goats before breakfast.

Which, if you’re traveling with children, is significantly more useful than hotel chocolates on pillows.

Why It Worked So Well for Our Family of 4

We spent two weeks camping through France as a family of four, and this pass became our secret weapon.

1. It Broke Up Long Driving Days

Family road trip math is simple:

After about three hours in the car, children (and parents!) become philosophers or feral creatures. Sometimes both.

The France Passion stops gave us natural places to pause. Instead of pushing through to the next town, we could stop somewhere interesting, stretch legs, explore, and settle in somewhere memorable.

2. It Made the Trip Feel More French

Sure, you can stay in campgrounds (and we did in Paris, actually!), but staying on working farms and vineyards gave us a completely different feel for the country.

We bought apple juice from orchard owners.
We bought cheese from a farmer’s daughter who was making it at her agriculture school.
We met the cutest donkeys and sheep.
The kids saw where food actually comes from.

It felt slower, more personal, and much more connected than simply passing through.

3. It Saved Money

This matters, especially with a family.

The pass itself is incredibly affordable (just €33, and farm stays are FREE for up to 24 hours (with the expectation that you support the host by purchasing produce or products if you’d like).

So instead of paying campground fees every single night, we mixed in these stays and kept our budget far happier.

I love travel magic. I also love not hemorrhaging money.

Our Kids Loved It

Children are surprisingly easy to impress when animals, cheese, and juice are involved.

We woke up in a vineyard and went for a wine tasting as soon as the tasting room opened (twice!).
We got a tour through a biodynamic homestead.
Another had the largest earth worm that either of my kids had ever seen.
Another had the kind of view adults pay serious money for and children completely ignore while asking for snacks.

Classic.

But overall, it gave all of us room and little moments of adventure that hotels just don’t.

Things to Know Before You Go

A few honest notes:

You Need to Be Self-Contained

Many stops are designed for motorhomes, campervans, or campers that don’t need full facilities. Most of the farms offered showers, and all of the stops had bathrooms we could use. The app tells you all of the details ahead of time!

But if your family requires a long hot shower every evening and a hairdryer with emotional support capabilities, plan accordingly.

It’s Better for Flexible Travelers

This works best if you enjoy a little spontaneity. You CAN’T make reservations. So each need we had a rough plan and a couple of options. Thankfully, every stop worked out fine for us and every farmer was incredibly gracious and generous.

Would I Use It Again?

Immediately.

In fact, I’d build another France road trip around it in a heartbeat.

For families, it offers that rare travel trifecta:

  • affordable

  • memorable

  • genuinely enjoyable for adults and children

Which, as any parent knows, is rarer than a peaceful airport breakfast.

Final Verdict

If you’re planning a family camping trip through France and want more than just campsites and motorway service stations, get the France Passion Pass.

It turned ordinary overnight stops into experiences. It slowed us down in the best way. It gave our kids space to roam and us little glimpses into real French rural life.

And years from now, I doubt anyone will remember the standard campground with the coin-operated showers.

But the vineyard sunset?
The goat farm?
The orchard breakfast stop?

Those are the moments that stay.
