Why I Changed My Mind About Traveling With a Guide

There was a time when I thought the best way to travel was completely independently.

No guide. No schedule. No one shaping the experience except curiosity and my wanderlust. I believed the most authentic travel experiences only happened when you found them yourself. Serendipitously stumbling upon something on an unfamiliar street, making spontaneous decisions, and learning as I went.

And honestly, I still love aspects of that kind of travel… if I have a lot more time in a place.

But over time, my perspective changed on how to have a great '“trip”.

I realized independent travel can help you see a place. A great guide can help you understand it.

That difference is everything.

A knowledgeable guide adds context, history, and meaning to what might otherwise just be a beautiful scene. They explain traditions, decode customs, and share the stories that make a destination come alive.

Without that insight, you can admire a market, a vineyard, a church, or a village square. You can go to a café and order what looks good, stumble your way through a menu in a different language that you don’t speak.

But with a great guide, you begin to understand context. You move through a different place with the fluidity of a local. You can never really “be” local in such a short span, but with a guide, you can get a taste of what it might be like.

I also learned that traveling with a guide doesn’t mean giving up spontaneity. The best guides enhance discovery rather than restrict it. They know where to leave room for surprise, curiosity, and the moments no itinerary can predict.

Today, I still love independent wandering and free time to explore.

But I no longer see guided travel as the lesser option.

Now I see the right guide as one of the greatest luxuries in travel. It’s someone who can turn a trip into a deeper, richer, more meaningful experience.

Have you had a great experience with a guide? Who was it and where?
